WELCOME TO AEDU-Sri Lanka

Assisting Empowering Developing & Uniting

Thank you for your interest in the charitable work of AEDU-Sri Lanka and for visiting our website.

AEDU -Sri Lanka is a charitable organisation dedicated to uplifting the lives of underprivileged children in the North and East regions of Sri Lanka.

AEDU-International was established in 2004 and implementing its projects through AEDU-In Sri Lanka.

Following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, AEDU-International evolved and expanded its horizons to support the orphans of Tsunami and war by implementing the foster care programme.

Foster care programme promotes the retention of children who had lost their parents or the breadwinner in the community.

This foster care programme encourages relatives or the Mother to care for children within the community and discourages unnecessary institutionalisation.

AEDU-International foster care programme has been running successfully in the Batticaloa district since 2004 and hence, this foster care programme was taken up by the Trincomalee District in 2008 and by the Amparai district in 2013.

AEDU-Sri Lanaka organisations in Sri Lanka are registered in each district as separate voluntary organisations with separate committees to function independently within the boundaries of the particular districts.

The North and East regions of Sri Lanka were affected by war for over two decades where thousands of children have become orphans. 25 years of violent conflicts have left most of the population in these regions traumatized and over 100,000 have died. There are 98,000 widows in the region.

In addition, the Boxing Day Tsunami has claimed 30,000 lives in Sri Lanka. It disrupted the lives and livelihoods of tens of thousands of people. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and many were left homeless. This brought a sudden surge of orphans into the community.

Repeated displacements and becoming refugees have compelled many vulnerable already underprivileged children to loose their school education. Many thousands of children are dropping out of school each year.

There are numerous orphanages in the North and East regions and are ever increasing. Children who have lost the parents were cared for in children homes (orphanages) prior to the Tsunami. In addition, many children who had both parents were also placed in the orphanages as parents were unable to feed their children.

Orphanages were the only sanctuary for these children until Tsunami.

Conflict, natural disasters and the impact of the world economy have forced thousands of children to drop out of school each year.

While the world's focus has largely moved on, the children and families living in the wake of the tsunami and war are still facing a long road to recovery.

AEDU-Sri Lanka aims to help these underprivileged children gain a proper education and healthy life while living within the community by implementing the Foster care programme.

AEDU-International is implementing various projects including financial assiatance to underprivileged university students and empowering widows.

The financial assistance you give will help these children live with their relatives or mother.

Please join hands with AEDU-Sri Lanka to bring hope into these traumatized vulnerable young lives.
