A Little contribution can change a life in a great way.

The ravages of the Civil war spanning for over 2 decades and the Tsunami disaster of 2004 have brought immense hardships into the lives of many thousands of children in the North and East regions of Sri Lanka. Many children have lost both parents and many families have lost their bread winner.

Orphanages were the only sanctuary for these children until the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. During the aftermath of the Tsunami, the Department of Probation and Child Care along with UNICEF recommended the retention of these children in the community fostered by a relative or friend.

There are numerous orphanages in the North and East regions. These house children who have lost one or both parents. There are numerous children who are in institutional care even though both parents are alive. They are placed in orphanages by parents as they are unable to provide the bare necessities due to poverty.

These regions saw a sudden surge of orphans into the community following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. Sri Lanka was one of the worst affected with the North and East regions experiencing 60% of the total damage. Thousands of people lost their property and their livelihoods. Children not only lost a parent or both parents but also lost education for many months.

In addition, repeated displacement due to civil war and natural disasters and becoming refugees have compelled many vulnerable already underprivileged children to loose their school education and many thousands of children are dropping out of school each year.

The recent escalation of violence has lead to untold suffering and many becoming orphans.

AEDU-International was established in 2004 to support children and family affected by the Tsunami. After the Tsunami disaster it expanded its horizon to support the orphans of Tsunami and war.

One of the main objectives of the AEDU-International is to implement foster care. It expanded its services to the Trincomalee, Amparai and Batticaloa districts as AEDU-Sri Lanka(Trincomalee district ) AEDU-Sri Lanka (Amparai District) and AEDU-Sri Lanka (Batticaloa District).

AEDU-International aims to uplift the lives of these underprivileged children living in the North and East regions of Sri Lanka. AEDU-International encourages and implements foster care and it will only recommend placing a child in an orphanage but only as a last resort, if fostering becomes impossible.

The integral characteristics that make AEDU-Sri Lanka unique are as follows.
  • We have a group of credible and committed individuals in our committees in each district. (Currently we have functioning bodies in Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Amparai districts. Details of the members and contact details are on our website on each district page.)
  • We do not incur any administrative cost and therefore the full amount you donate will reach the child.
  • Our team in the field in each district will monitor the holistic wellbeing and the progress of the child by making regular visits and will provide you with periodic progress reports.
  • All our members are working on voluntary basis.
  • We are committed towards transparency and effective use of funds and our programmes are designed accordingly.

Please help a child and instil hope where there is despair. The needs of the children differ according to their age and educational progress.

We are committed to uplifting the lives of underprivileged children.
