HELP A CHILD TODAY Small Contribution for Big Change. The ravages of the Civil war spanning for over 2 decades and the Tsunami disaster of 2004 have brought immense hardships into the lives of many thousands of children in the North and East regions of Sri Lanka. Many children have lost both parents and many families have lost their bread winner. Orphanages were the only sanctuary for these children until the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. During the aftermath of the Tsunami, the Department of Probation and Child Care along with UNICEF recommended the retention of these children in the community fostered by a relative or friend. There are numerous orphanages in the North and East regions. These house children who have lost one or both parents. There are numerous children who are in institutional care even though both parents are alive. They are placed in orphanages by parents as they are unable to provide the bare necessities due to poverty. These regions saw a sudden surge of orphans into the community following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. Sri Lanka was one of the worst affected with the North and East regions experiencing 60% of the total damage. Thousands of people lost their property and their livelihoods. Children not only lost a parent or both parents but also lost education for many months.
The recent escalation of violence has lead to untold suffering and many becoming orphans. AEDU was started in 1995 by a group of well-wishers in the Batticaloa district to support the underprivileged university students. After the Tsunami disaster it expanded its horizon to support the orphans of Tsunami and war. The same model was taken up by Trincomalee in 2008. One of the main objectives of the AEDU is to implement foster care.AEDU aims to uplift the lives of these underprivileged children living in the North and East regions of Sri Lanka. AEDU encourages and implements foster care and it will only recommend placing a child in an orphanage but only as a last resort, if fostering becomes impossible.
